LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell men's track & field wrapped up the first day of the 2022 Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships in fourth place, as Bison scored in four different events and three others advanced to Saturday's finals.
Navy (84) sits first through the first day of events, Army is in second (57.5), and Boston U. (24) is a spot ahead of Bucknell (9.5) at third.
"Although we don't have a lot of points, I thought our men had a good day one. The 400 was obviously our highlight with Wolford-Tuffy and Sample looking great in the trials and both advancing," said head coach Kevin Donner. "Chase advanced in the mile, which was a very tough field, and he is ready to mix it up. Feeney came up big in the weight throw with some valuable points in a tough field and continues to improve. Perinotti juggled day one of the heptathlon and the open pole vault and is in good position to score points in the heptathlon on day two. Whittaker had a very nice 5k, and our 4x800 relay did a very respectable job. Throw in a bunch of personal records and IC4A marks and we can't complain."
Bucknell's 4x800 relay team (Thomas Matsumura, Alex Simpson, Brendan O'Toole, Colby Belczyk) scored the most for Bucknell on day one, earning five points by placing fourth with a 7:47.43.
Robert Feeney had a great outing in the weight throw, scoring for the Bison with a seventh-place finish and a personal-best 58-8, which ranks eighth on Bucknell's top 10 list. Also placing seventh overall was Samuel Whittaker in the 5000. The junior ran a personal-best 14:36.12.
Senior Franco Perinotti grabbed half a point for Bucknell in the pole vault, tying with Army's Brian McSweeney for eighth (14-11). Perinotti also currently sits seventh in the heptathlon with 2,527 points and with three events still to run on Sunday. Navy's Austin Baynes is in first with 3,090.
Bucknell had two runners advance out of the 400 prelims, as sophomore Ethan Wolford-Tuffy took fifth (49.64) and teammate Rayven Sample finished just behind him at sixth (49.79). Lastly, senior Owen Chase took eighth in the mile prelims with a 4:13.36 and will compete in the event again tomorrow with a chance to add to Bucknell's point total.
Sunday's events begin at 11 a.m. at the Gerhard Fieldhouse.
