LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman wrestler Kolby DePron captured his first career Bison Athlete of the Week nod.
DePron was recognized for his performance during the Bucknell wrestling team's EIWA-opening victories at LIU and Hofstra. The 149 pounder went 2-0 with a first-period pin and a major decision, improving his season win total to a team-high 17.
DePron opened his day with a commanding 13-3 major decision over LIU's Drew Witham, during which he logged over two minutes of riding time. His pin of Hofstra's Michael Leandrou, which came in just 2:20, was instrumental to the team's 21-15 win; it netted the Bison six points that, as part of their 4-1 start, helped stake them an early 15-3 advantage that proved too much for the Pride to overcome.
DePron is the second wrestler to be selected as the Bison Athlete of the Week this school year, joining Kurt Phipps. Phipps, a sophomore 133 pounder, was honored as both the EIWA Wrestler and Bison Athlete of the Week on Dec. 20 after going 2-0 during Bucknell's tri-dual with Buffalo and Lock Haven; most notably, Phipps knocked off his first career nationally ranked opponent in then No. 29 Derek Spann (Buffalo).
DePron and the Bison next continue their road swing with EIWA duals at Harvard (Jan. 14 at 6 p.m.) and Brown (Jan. 15 at 12 p.m.).
