ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell women's tennis team advanced two singles players and one doubles team to the main draw finals at the Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational on Saturday at Navy's Brigade Sports Complex.
Tomorrow, Whitney King and Anna Lajos will compete for titles at 'B' Courage singles and 'C' Commitment singles respectively. In addition, King will team with senior captain Daniela Bellini in the championship match at 'A' Honor doubles.
King advanced to the 'B' Courage singles semifinals behind a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Navy's Katreina Corpuz. Then, she scored a hard-fought win over Fairleigh Dickinson's Aleksandra Vorozheikina, a senior and two-time All-NEC honoree. After winning the first set, 6-4, King dropped the second by the same margin. She then edged Vorozheikina in the decisive third set, 10-8, to earn a date with Navy's Samantha Johns in the finals.
Lajos needed three sets to top Binghamton's Kyra Bergmann in the quarterfinals. After taking the first, 6-3, she was downed in the second, 6-4. She then topped Bergmann, 11-9, in the final set to advance to the semifinals. There, she made quick work of St. Bonaventure's Alexandra Jansson, 6-4, 6-1 to capture a spot in the title match with Fairleigh Dickinson's Namie Isago.
King and Bellini advanced to the 'A' Honor doubles finals behind a tight 8-7 victory over Navy's Katreina Corpuz and Meghana Komarraju. They will face another Navy tandem in tomorrow's finals: Jillian Taggart and Emily Tannenbaum.
Bellini reached the semifinals in the 'A' Honor singles bracket on the strength of a 6-3, 6-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson's Gauri Bhagia. She was topped for the first time this season there, ceding a heartbreaking 4-6, 6-4, 9-11 loss to Navy's Taggart, an 2021 All-Patriot League First Team selection.
The Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational concludes tomorrow, with matches beginning at 9 a.m.
