Bison Women's Tennis Edged 4-3 in Tight Match at Army

WEST POINT N.Y. – The Bucknell women's tennis team fought hard in a Friday afternoon match at Army West Point, but after taking the Black Knights to a 3-3 tie, the Bison fell in their final singles match and lost 4-3. Army (8-2, 5-0 PL) remained undefeated in Patriot League play with the win, while Bucknell moved to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the league.
After losing the doubles point, Bucknell rallied and won three of the next five singles matches to even the score. The final singles decision went three sets before Army earned the final point and took the match.
The Bison played tough all day and took three singles matches to third sets. Cayla Koch continued her outstanding senior campaign and remained unbeaten in singles with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Army's Elizabeth Gilbert at No. 2. Koch is now 4-0 on the season.
Two of the Bison's singles points came from the rookie class, including an impressive 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5 by Laurel Utterback. The North Canton, Ohio native improved to 2-1 in singles play with the win. Fellow rookie Tyne Miller also collected her second singles win of the season with a 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Carolyn Ahn at No. 3.
The contest came down to a No. 4 singles matchup between senior Sofia Ayuso and Army sophomore Sophie McKenzie. Ayuso took her opponent down to the wire before surrendering the point by a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 score.
Utterback and rookie Kate Novak earned Bucknell's lone doubles match, defeating junior Maryjo Pidgeon and sophomore McKinnley Smith 7-6 (1) at No. 3.
Bucknell will take Saturday off before hosting the Loyola Greyhounds at home on Sunday, April 11. Sunday's match is scheduled to begin at noon.
