LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell softball pitcher Kelly Toomey was selected as the Bison Athlete of the Week, which is presented by Mid-Penn Energy and Mid-Penn Engineering.
Toomey, a native of Cedar Grove, N.J., earned the award after an outstanding performance in the pitching circle during the Bison's 1-0 win over Holy Cross on Sunday. The junior allowed just one hit over seven innings and struck out eight batters in the shutout effort.
Four of the first six batters Toomey faced on Sunday went down swinging. She saw just four baserunners throughout the game and had a no-hitter going until the final at-bat of the afternoon. Toomey allowed a double to the last batter, which led to the final out being made at home plate as Holy Cross attempted to tie the game on the hit.
Bucknell's last one-hit game was against Mount St. Mary's in April 2019.
Toomey, who joined the Bison this year after transferring from La Salle, is now 4-0 in her four starts this season and has thrown eight strikeouts in two consecutive appearances.
Bucknell won three of four games in the Holy Cross series and is now 7-1 in Patriot League play. The team had solid pitching all weekend, as sophomore Kaiya Burton earned two wins in the circle. Up next, the Bison will play a non-conference doubleheader against Coppin State on Sunday, April 11.
