SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After three weeks without competition and almost two years without a Patriot League match, the Bucknell women's tennis team defeated Colgate 4-1 on the road Saturday for its second win of the season. The Bison captured three singles wins and took two of three doubles matches to defeat the Raiders and improve to 1-0 in league standings.
Senior Cayla Koch and junior Daniela Bellini got the day started with a strong showing at No. 1 doubles. The pair won 6-1 in their first doubles match together this spring. That effort was followed up with a win at No. 3 doubles by senior Rachel Carroll and rookie Laurel Utterback, who won 6-4 to get Bucknell the doubles point.
Koch also earned Bucknell a point at No. 2 singles, winning 6-4, 6-4 against Colgate first-year Sara De Oliveira. Koch improved to 2-0 in singles play this spring with the victory. Right behind her was rookie Tyne Miller earning her first collegiate singles win at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-3 decision against sophomore Rebecca Wolf.
Sealing the match with a tight three-set victory was rookie Laurel Utterback, who came back to win 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 over sophomore Emily Untermeyer in her first collegiate singles contest.
Bellini was leading her opponent in the second set on court one, and Carroll was in a 6-4, 2-5 matchup at No. 6 singles before the match was finished.
The 4-1 victory gave head coach Tammy Cecchini her first Patriot League win with the Bison, and the team is now 8-3 overall under her direction.
Bucknell stays on the road for a Sunday matchup with Lehigh. The Bison and the Mountain Hawks are scheduled to kick it off at 1 p.m.
