LEWISBURG, Pa. – First-year Zoie Smith of the Bucknell softball team has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday, following another strong weekend of play. It's the second consecutive honor the rookie has earned through two weekends of play after being named Patriot League Player of the Week last week.
Smith batted .375 (3-for-8) in three games at Longwood and produced two more extra-base hits and three more RBIs, adding to her team-leading totals. Through five games, Smith leads the Bison in RBIs (5), home runs (2), doubles (3), hits (8), and runs scored (6).
Smith started off the weekend in spectacular fashion, hitting her second homer of the season in her first at-bat down in Farmville, Va. The home run gave Bucknell its first two runs of the series. In the second game of the doubleheader Smith went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and another RBI. She added nine more putouts over the weekend and caught one runner stealing.
Of the Patriot League players that have five or more at-bats this season, Smith ranks fourth with a .500 (8-for-16) batting average. She's currently tied for third in runs scored, is third in hits, and is tied for the league-lead in doubles.
Chase Knapp was also an honorable mention for Player of the Week after going 4-for-8 at the plate and knocking in four RBIs. All four of the sophomore's RBIs came from a grand slam in Saturday evening's game, which tied the score at 6-6 with the Lancers.
Bucknell hits the road again this weekend for a doubleheader at Delaware on Sunday, March 21.
