"We're excited to get going. Our sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and throwers have been training since early September," said head coach Kevin Donner. "Getting in a competition before the semester break is very critical because we have been training for about 10 weeks, and we'll get a good gauge of what kind of team we're going to be. We're going to bust a little bit of rust and see what they're made out of. It's a low-key meet, although we've got a few extra teams than what we normally have."
About the Bison
- Bucknell kicks off its indoor season with the Bison Opener at the Gerhard Field House this weekend with events on Friday and Saturday. It's Bucknell's first indoor event since the 2019-20 season. This Bison Opener will not be a scored meet.
- The meet begins with men's heptathlon events on Friday, and the remainder of the events proceed Saturday morning.
- The Bison captured first-place finishes in six events in the 2019-20 Bison Opener, including the 60m dash, pole vault, long jump, weight throw, the 800, and the 4x400.
- Other notable performances from the last Bison Opener included a first-place finish in the 800 by then-freshman Dylan Lopresti and a second-place finish by then-sophomore Brendan O'Toole.
- Among Bucknell's most impressive returners this season is junior Anthony Zamarra, who placed fourth in the 2021 Outdoor Patriot League Championships in shot put. Senior Ian Lawrence also scored in last year's Patriot League Championships with a personal-best triple jump mark (45-1.5), as did sophomore Tommy Cahill.
- Bucknell welcomed a host of rookie athletes to the roster this fall, including 2021 PIAA state champion Colby Belczyk.
- As a team, Bucknell placed third in the 2019-20 Patriot League Indoor Championships.
- The majority of Bucknell's cross country runners will not compete this weekend as they continue to rest up following the fall season.
- The Bison Opener is Bucknell's only meet of this calendar year. The team won't compete again until Jan. 15, 2022.
"We want to see how our balance is. We want to see what the strengths and weaknesses of our program are. We want to see if there are any holes we need to fill. This is a meet where I'm going to walk around and get a gauge of where we're at," said Donner.
