Over 2,680 Donors Contributed to Bucknell Athletics & Recreation Program During the 24-Hour Event
LEWISBURG, PA – Alumni, parents and friends of the Bucknell University athletics and recreation program came together in unprecedented fashion, during one of the most uncertain times globally, and showed their true dedication and Orange & Blue spirit during the One Herd One Day giving challenge on May 27-28. A total of 2,687 members of the Bison Family participated in the annual 24-hour challenge, raising $925,858. While both figures are new records for the event, the dollar total is nearly twice as high as the previous mark.
"One Herd One Day was a great example of the tremendous pride and passion our alumni, parents and friends have for the institution and in particular for our athletics programs," said Jermaine Truax, director of athletics and recreation. "Even in these trying times nationally and globally, this year's 24-hour giving challenge showed that the generosity of the collective Bison Family is simply amazing, and it is why we are all so proud to wear the Orange & Blue. It also shows that great things can be accomplished when we are united. I challenge all of Bison nation to come together like we did on this day, and be a vehicle for positive change."
Members of the Bucknell Athletics staff, head coaches, student-athletes, and colleagues in University Advancement worked hard to promote the day that resulted in this historic outcome. For the first time in the history of the event, a program toped the $100,000 mark, as both men's soccer ($102,603) and baseball ($100,134) eclipsed the plateau to finish 1-2 in terms of dollars raised. The football ($93,220) program followed closely behind in third place. For the second consecutive year, the men's golf program led the way in average gift size at $768. The Spiked Shoe Program, which supports the men's and women's track and field/cross country teams, led the way in total donors with 332.
"The concept of a giving challenge has been extremely successful for our programs over the past several years, but the commitment made by our Bison Family this year was absolutely phenomenal," said senior associate director of athletics Todd Newcomb '88, P'19, the director of the Bison Club. "In addition to the record-setting support we received from our donor base, the event could not have been the success that it was without the assistance of several departments on campus, most notably University Advancement and its gift processing team."
The challenge was a success in every way, as 85% of Bucknell's varsity programs raised more money and had more donors than a year ago. In addition, recreation and club sports programs were included in the event for the first time, receiving nearly $60,000 in financial support.
