This Week in Bucknell Athletics

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring on Saturday, and the Bucknell spring sports teams celebrated by combining for seven victories over the weekend. The 23rd-ranked women's water polo team accounted for four them with an undefeated weekend at the Bruno Classic. Ally Furano was one of the stars, as she piled up 21 goals on 29 shots in the four wins, including a school-record eight goals in the season opener against No. 24 Marist. You can catch the Bison at home this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Bucknell Invitational at Kinney Natatorium. The Friday and Sunday games will stream on the Patriot League Network.

Men's lacrosse kicked off the 2020 season with a decisive 16-9 win over Furman. The Bison led 10-1 at the half behind five goals from Will Yorke and some dominant faceoff play from Nick Crovatto, who finished 18-for-27 with 12 ground balls. Bucknell is back at it this Saturday at Bryant. Men's tennis topped Siena 5-2 in South Williamsport on Sunday, and first-year women's coach Tammy Cecchini picked up a dramatic 4-3 win over Niagara on her team's opening weekend. Both squads will have home matches later this week.

The next two spring squads to open up are softball and women's lacrosse. New women's lax head coach Jackie Dando debuts on Saturday at home against Sacred Heart, while the softball team plays four games in Spartanburg, S.C., on Friday and Saturday.

While the spring teams are just getting going, the winter teams are in the thick of their seasons. Both basketball teams have home games this week, starting with the men tonight against Lafayette in a key Patriot League battle. The women remain in sole possession of first place and are idle until Loyola comes to Sojka Pavilion on Saturday.

Wrestling hosts Binghamton in Davis Gym on Saturday, the track and field teams return to Penn State for the second straight weekend, and Bison swimmers and divers are now off until the Patriot League Championships at Navy Feb. 19-22.
