CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Bucknell wrestling team's five-dual winning streak came to an end with a 25-9 loss to No. 8 North Carolina on Saturday at Carmichael Arena.
The Tar Heels (11-1, 2-0 ACC) won eight of 10 bouts to dispatch the Bison (7-4, 5-1 EIWA), who had won nine of 10 bouts against four-straight opponents entering the dual.
For Bucknell, Zach Hartman made a statement, pinning Kennedy Monday in just 2:53. Hartman was ranked behind Monday in the most recent Intermat poll, checking in at No. 18 to Monday's No. 11 at 165 pounds; the pin was his team-leading eighth of the season, one shy of matching his impressive 2018-19 total.
With his victory over Monday, Hartman improved to 20-6 on the season, including a perfect 9-0 in dual competition.
Not to be outdone, Drew Phipps moved to 22-5 on the season, and 10-1 in dual action, with a tight 3-2 decision over Brandon Whitman. The senior is now just three victories away from matching his career-high total, set a year ago.
Like Phipps's victory, the majority of the bouts were close. Three others were decided by two or fewer points. Jaden Fisher went toe to toe with A.C. Headlee, Intermat's 17th-ranked wrestler at 157 pounds. After the freshman forced overtime with a third-period escape, Headlee scored a takedown in the first sudden victory frame to escape with a 3-1 decision.
In addition, Geo Barzona (125) ceded a tight 5-3 decision to Joey Melendez while Brandon Stokes (285) was clipped by Brandon Whitman, 3-2.
In total, the Tar Heels sent four ranked wrestlers to the mat, with only one picking up bonus points for their team.
The Bison next host Binghamton (Feb. 8 at 12 p.m.) before traveling to American (Feb. 9 at 12 p.m.) in EIWA action.
