LEWISBURG, Pa. — Kimbal Mackenzie '19, a First Team All-Patriot League guard and former captain of the Bucknell men's basketball team, has signed to play with Carramimbre CBC Valladolid in Spain next season.
Mackenzie's new club plays in LEB Gold, which is Spain's second division. Spain's top league is considered one of the best in the world outside the United States, and the country is known as a hotbed of basketball in Europe. A number of Bucknell alumni have played in Spain, most notably Mike Muscala '13, who started his professional career there before joining the NBA.
Valladolid is located in northwest Spain and is known as the city where Christopher Columbus died in 1506. The Valladolid basketball team, coached by Hugo Lopez, is coming off a good season. The squad in 2018-19 finished in sixth place in the 18-team league with a 201-14 record.
Since graduating in May, Mackenzie has been prepping in his native Canada with the Guelph Nighthawks of the Canadian Elite Basketball League. In three games with the Nighthawks, Mackenzie averaged 20.0 points per game while shooting 50 percent from the field, 36 percent from the 3-point arc and 87 percent from the foul line.
Mackenzie had a terrific career at Bucknell. He was a four-year contributor and three-year starter on Bison teams that captured four straight Patriot League regular-season titles and went to the NCAA Tournament in 2017 and 2018. He was a two-time All-Patriot League selection, garnering First Team honors in 2019 and Third Team honors in 2017.
Mackenzie enjoyed a sensational senior year, particularly in the postseason, when he averaged 25.0 points per game with 16 3-pointers in 31 attempts in three Patriot League Tournament games. For the season, Mackenzie logged 17.6 points per game to rank third in the Patriot League in scoring. His 582 points rank No. 7 in Bucknell history, and his 83 made 3-pointers rank No. 4 on the team's all-time single-season list.
Also named the league's 2019 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Mackenzie graduated with 1,330 career points to rank 18th in school history.
Bucknell had six alumni playing professionally in 2018-19, including Muscala, who completed his sixth year in the NBA. Earlier this month Zach Thomas '18 signed with Pesaro in Italy's Serie A.
Check back throughout the summer for additional alumni signings.
