Two Bucknell Wrestlers Place at U23 Nationals

AKRON, Ohio – Bucknell's Drew Phipps and Jakob Campbell earned podium spots at the USA Wrestling U23 Nationals, held May 31 to June 2 at the University of Akron's Louis and Freda Stile Athletic Field House.
Competing in the freestyle division, Phipps took third at 92kg with a 5-1 record while Campbell went seventh at 57kg with a 5-2 ledger. For their efforts, they captured All-America laurels.
Phipps and Campbell were among nine Bison who competed at the prestigious event, joining Carnell Andrews (61kg), David Campbell (61kg), Jacob Ferreira (86kg), Zach Hartman (74kg), Kyle Inlander (86kg), Matthew Kolonia (70kg) and Brandon Seidman (57kg). Of the latter group, Andrews, Hartman, Inlander, Kolonia and Seidman all went 2-2.
Phipps advanced to the 92kg semifinals by outscoring his first three opponents by a combined margin of 34-2. In the semifinals, he gave Oklahoma's Jakob Woodley, the eventual champion, a battle but fell by a 10-3 margin. He rebounded with a 12-2 victory in the consolation semifinals to earn a spot in the third-place bout. He ultimately edged Michigan's Jackson Striggow, 7-6, to secure third.
Campbell cruised to the 57kg quarterfinals, blanking his first three opponents by a combined margin of 32-0. A tight 10-4 loss to Michael Colaiocco dropped him to the consolation bracket, where he ultimately landed in the seventh-place bout following a win and a loss. There, he was a commanding 10-0 victor over Benyamin Kamali.
Inlander and Seidman advanced as far as the round of 16 in their respective championship brackets. Hartman won his first two bouts by a combined margin of 25-2 before ceding a tight 14-10 loss to Ebed Jarrell in the championship round of 32. With little time remaining in his first consolation bout, Hartman was ahead, but Noah Grover came away with a pin to emerge victorious.
