BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Five Bucknell wrestlers captured EIWA Academic Achievement Awards for their performance on the mat and in the classroom during the 2018-19 campaign.
Headlining the Bison honorees were NCAA qualifiers Zach Hartman and Drew Phipps. The duo was joined on the EIWA All-Academic squad by Geo Barzona, Frankie Guida, Jr. and Kyle Inlander.
Barzona and Phipps previously captured EIWA Academic Achievement Awards in 2017-18. Guida, Jr., Hartman and Inlander are first-time EIWA All-Academic selections.
To be eligible for this award, wrestlers must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.20 and participated in the EIWA Championships or posted a cumulative GPA of 3.00 and qualified for the NCAA Championships.
Hartman, a Biology major, was one of three student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA. He joined Drexel's Nick Widmann and Navy's Jacob Allen in that exclusive club; notably, Hartman was the only one of the three to make the EIWA podium.
Of Bucknell's five EIWA All-Academic team members, two placed at the 2019 EIWA Championships. Hartman took second in the 157-pound weight class; he became the first Bison freshman to finish as an EIWA runner-up. Phipps placed sixth in the 197-pound weight class; it was the second time he earned a spot on the EIWA podium, as he finished eighth in the 184-pound weight class at the 2018 EIWA Championships.
