Slagus and Mack Were First Team Honorees, While Walker Made the Second Team
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell recently wrapped up at least a share of the Patriot League women's basketball regular season title for the third time in four years, and three Bison players were rewarded Friday for their efforts toward that accomplishment. Kaitlyn Slagus and Ellie Mack were voted First Team All-Patriot League, while Kate Walker was a Second Team selection.
Bucknell's three All-Patriot League selections tied for the most of any team in the conference, and the Bison were the only team to have two players make the First Team. It was the second time the Bison had two First Team honorees during Aaron Roussell's seven seasons as head coach.
Slagus picked up her third career All-Patriot League honor, adding to her two Second Team accolades as a sophomore and junior. The senior's shooting efficiency this season is unprecedented in program history. She ranks first in the Patriot League in field goal percentage (.583, 141-242) despite being a forward that has a game that extends beyond the arc. She is third in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (.402, 35-87) and one of the only players ahead of her is her own teammate, sophomore Abby Kapp.
Despite playing just 27.2 minutes per game, which ranks 29th in the Patriot League, Slagus's name is scattered throughout the Patriot League's league leaders list. She ranks eighth in scoring (12.8), eighth in rebounding (7.4), eighth in free throw percentage (.795), and second in blocked shots (1.5). She recently became the program's all-time leader in rebounds with 925 and ranks eighth in program history with 1,429 points.
Mack had a breakout season, making the First Team despite playing with a group of seniors that have established themselves as one of the best classes in league history. She saved her best performance for the last game of the regular season, scoring a career-high 29 points while hitting seven 3-pointers in an 84-66 win over Army West Point that clinched the top seed in the conference tournament.
That game was Mack's best as far as numbers, but she has had consistent production all season, posting 22 games with double-digit points. The junior ranks second on the team in scoring (12.7), second in rebounding (6.7), third in assists (2.2), second in blocks (1.2), and third in steals (1.0). Mack did her best work in conference play, averaging 14.3 points and 6.8 rebounds.
Walker, a First Team honoree as a junior, probably could have repeated that selection this year if not for being on such a balanced team. She averaged 10.8 points and became more of a distributor this season with a career-high 85 assists. She enters the postseason with 1,080 career points.
Like Mack, Walker stepped up in league play. The senior scored in double-digits in 13 of the 18 conference games, including each of the final eight. She put a stamp on the regular season with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting and a perfect 5-for-5 mark from the line in the win over the Black Knights.
Bucknell enters the Patriot League Tournament as the top seed for the second time in three seasons. The Bison will host a quarterfinal game on Monday at 6 p.m. The opponent will be the winner of Saturday's game between eighth-seeded Loyola (Md.) and ninth-seeded Navy.
