Two Bison also made the second NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell's Jakob Campbell, Zach Hartman, Kyle Inlander and Drew Phipps appeared in the first NCAA rating percentage index.Â
In addition, Hartman and Phipps made the second of four NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings, which, in conjunction with the rating percentage index, are used in the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
In the RPI, Hartman and Phipps each made the top 15. Hartman was slotted 10th at 157 pounds while Phipps was 12th at 197 pounds. Campbell (125) and Inlander (184) were each ranked 32nd in his respective weight class.
In the NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings, Hartman was listed 11th, down one spot from the first iteration. Phipps entered the rankings for the first time this season at 26th. During the 2017-18 campaign, Phipps rose as high as 27th in the RPI (first iteration) and 29th in the NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings (final iteration) in the 184-pound weight class.
Hartman has enjoyed a sensational freshman campaign and currently boasts a 21-5 record. An unbeaten 9-0 in EIWA duals, he has gone 12-3 overall in dual action. Hartman, who has risen as high as eighth in both the Intermat and Open Mat rankings, boasts a team-best eight pins, bolstered by a stretch where he pinned five of seven opponents from Jan. 11 to Feb. 3. To date, he has faced nine ranked opponents and holds a 5-4 record against them; all four of his losses were to wrestlers slotted in Intermat's top 10.
Phipps is coming off an upset of Army West Point's Rocco Caywood, who was ranked fourth nationally by Intermat, The Open Mat and FloWrestling entering their bout. He owns a 19-7 record, including a 12-3 mark in duals. The team leader with five major decisions, he ranks behind only Hartman in overall victories and is tied with the standout freshman in dual victories. He will ride a team-best nine-bout winning streak, over which he collected bonus points in four bouts, into this Friday's 7 p.m. dual at Binghamton.
Campbell is 14-7 on the year, including a solid 9-3 record in dual action. Ranked second behind Phipps with four major decisions, he went unbeaten in his first seven dual appearances of the 2018-19 campaign. Inlander has been a steady contributor during his first season as a starter, posting an 11-7 (6-5 dual) record.
Wrestlers in each weight class are measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches' rankings to earn spots in their qualifying tournaments for the 2019 NCAA Championships, slated for March 21-23 at PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, Pa. The coaches' rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament. For ranking purposes, coaches could only consider a wrestler that was designated as a starter at a respective weight class. To be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled within the last 30 days.
