LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell wrestling team was toppled by No. 17 North Carolina, 31-6, on Friday evening at Sojka Pavilion.
The Tar Heels (9-5, 1-0 ACC) won the first five bouts and never looked back. All three ranked North Carolina wrestlers picked up bonus points for their team, with two winning by second-period falls.
For the Bison (5-7, 3-3 EIWA), D.J. Hollingshead (165) and Drew Phipps (197) emerged victorious. Hollingshead registered two takedowns in the third period to dispatch Sawyer Davidson, 7-2, while Phipps was a comeback winner over Brandon Whitman. After Whitman opened the final frame with a reversal to take a 4-2 lead, Phipps cut his deficit to one with an escape. Only six seconds remained on the clock when Phipps scored a takedown to win by a 5-4 decision.
Zach Hartman, who was ranked as high as eighth nationally at 157 pounds, suffered his first defeat at the hands of an unranked grappler. Josh McClure clipped Hartman, 3-1, on a last-second takedown; after a lengthy review, Hartman was ruled not to have answered with a reversal, sealing the upset for McClure. With the heartbreaking loss, Hartman moved to 18-5, including a 14-1 mark against unranked foes.
Nick Stephani (174) gave Devin Kane a battle, riding him out for the entirety of the second period. But Kane ultimately picked up four back points early in the third period to score a 4-0 decision.
North Carolina was Bucknell's third ranked opponent of the season; the Bison previously faced No. 1 Penn State (3-42) and No. 24 Pittsburgh (4-34).
Bucknell returns to action on Sunday by welcoming Franklin & Marshall to Davis Gym for a 2 p.m. dual.
