Bucknell Student-Athletes Lead Way in Annual Senior Gift Drive

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell Class of 2017 has graduated, and 148 student-athletes have put on the Orange and Blue for the final time. Their accomplishments, both on the playing surfaces and in the classroom, have become part of the storied history of Bison Athletics.
That history includes a focus on the importance of philanthropic support, and giving back to the programs that provided such a positive experience to them over their four years as a Division I varsity student-athlete. All 148 senior student-athletes participated in the 2017 Senior Gift Drive, marking the seventh consecutive year Bison Athletics has reached that milestone.
"The amazing support of Bucknell University and Bison athletics by this dedicated group of senior students-athletes is inspirational," said director of athletics and recreation John Hardt. "Their recognition and engagement validates the efforts of so many who allow us to provide them with the powerful educational experience of varsity athletics. Thank you!"
Todd Newcomb '88, P'19, the director of the Bison Club, agreed, saying, “Our student-athletes continue to show a respect for their programs and an understanding that much of what they experienced was due to those alumni who came before them and have since given back financially. This is another great example of the leadership Bison student-athletes continue to exemplify.”
Since 2011 more than 1,000 senior student-athletes have made a gift in the Senior Gift Drive, but more importantly, many of those have become annual donors to the athletics program.
“The Senior Gift Drive program has become an important part in building our overall support base,” said Kyle Smith, manager of athletics development and the coordinator of the athletics portion of this year's event. “The teamwork between the athletics liaisons, the varsity team representatives and the staff has made the drive successful each year.”
With just over 30 days remaining in the current fiscal year at Bucknell, the Bison Club is hoping to close out another successful annual fundraising campaign.
