LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's track and field team competed in its second scored meet of the outdoor season Saturday when it hosted the Bucknell Team Challenge at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison finished second in the field of eight teams with 166.5 points, finishing behind champion Penn State (186).
The Bison earned the top three spots in the steeplechase. Freshman Margaret Thomson finished first with a time of 10:57.35. Her time is a personal-record and ranks fourth in program history. Lauren Hazzard was the runner-up with a time of 11:15.88, which is a personal-record and ranks top-10 in the Bucknell record book. Christine O'Kane finished third, crossing the line in 11:23.12.
Junior Carly Reiner won the triple jump title, beating out 18 participants with a leap of 38-2 ¼. Her performance ranks top-10 in program history. Kimberley Lapszynski finished fourth in the event, adding to the Bison score.
A team of Kafilat Oladian, Lapszynski, Reiner and Jess Bridle took first in the 4x100 relay, completing the race in 47.67. The time ranks top-10 in school annals.
Christine Bendzinski finished first in the 800-meter run, beating out 19 runners with a time of 2:12.53, while Brennan Sharkey was the runner-up in the 3,000, finishing in 10:23.33.
Jen Silvestri scored in two events on the day. She was the runner-up in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:02.09, while finishing fifth in the 100 hurdles.
Eight Bison scored in throwing events. Ellen Kalnins finished first in the hammer, recording a heave of 160-11 in a field of 28 participants. Tara Lee was the runner-up in the event, posting a toss of 152-11.
Abigail Brundage (shot put, hammer), Sophia Nnadi (shot put, discus), Brianna Tutuska (discus, hammer), Stephanie Easse (discus), Meg Sangimino (javelin) and Rebecca Skovira (javelin) each scored in their respective throwing event.
“We had a lot of mixed results today,” said head coach Kevin Donner. “However, I felt it was very productive. The windy conditions gave some events a nice advantage but the lap events were tough on the athletes. After a very successful Bison Outdoor Classic ended on Sunday, the shorter week made recovery a little tough. With only 12 days before leagues, it's time to prime the athletes and start to sharpen up.”
Bucknell will compete in one last meet before the Patriot League Outdoor Championships, the Maroon and Gold Invitational, Apr. 30 at Bloomsburg University.
