ORLANDO, Fla. – The Bucknell women's tennis team suffered a pair of losses Wednesday to Milwaukee and Fairleigh Dickinson on the second day of action on its spring break trip. The Bison remain at .500 on the year, moving to 4-4 overall.
Milwaukee improved to 6-5 on the season, while Fairleigh Dickinson moved to 3-1 overall.
Bucknell opened the day with a 4-3 loss to Milwaukee, but the match could have gone either way. Milwaukee won two of three doubles contests to take a 1-0 lead. Bucknell answered with three-straight singles victories, but would lose the next three, two of which were taken to a third set.
Maria Cioffi had no trouble in her win over Labina Petrovska at No. 1 singles, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. Cioffi improves to 14-4 overall and has won her last four singles matches.
Lisa Jouravleva won her singles matchup against Hayley Marshall in consecutive sets (6-2, 6-3) to improve to 11-6 on the year, while Lauren Fishbein won at No. 3 singles over Laurie Clark 6-4, 6-3. Jouravieva and Fishbein picked up the lone victory for the Bison at No. 2 doubles, winning the match 6-4.
Things did not get better against the Knights, dropping a 5-2 decision.
Stephanie Pino improved her singles record with a victory over Liza Rachenko, winning straight sets (6-3, 6-2). Pino has now won four in a row and moves to 6-3 on the year. Allie Lane was in control at No. 6 singles, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win.
“It was tough to lose both matches,” says head coach Rebecca Helt. “Spring is an amazing opportunity to get a lot of match play before starting Patriot League matches. It was really amazing to have all 12 players out there grinding in two matches simultaneously. It speaks volumes about our depth. I knew it would be tough to win both but we definitely should have won the Milwaukee match. I think our doubles let us down again today and we need that point. We are strong at the top and today was a great opportunity to see how our depth will fill out that line up.”
Bucknell wraps up its spring break trip tomorrow with a contest against Bryant. The match is scheduled for 12 p.m.
