LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's and women's track and field teams are scheduled for two events this weekend. The Bison will send a group of student-athletes to the Youngstown State National Invitational, while the remaining group will compete in the nearby Crusader Challenge hosted by Susquehanna University.
Teams set to compete in the YSU Invite include Slippery Rock, Detroit, VMI, Bloomsburg, Oakland, Lock Haven, Wheeling Jesuit, Glenville State, Indiana (Pa.), California (Pa.), Seton Hill, Robert Morris, Duquesne, St. Vincent and Canisius. The two-day meet begins on Friday afternoon with the women's pentathlon and concludes Saturday with the men's 4x400 meter relay.
“This is the first time that we will travel as a team and our athletes are excited”, says head coach Kevin Donner. “I like the oversized 300 meter track and I like competing against schools from the Midwest. Usually, this is the time of year when we see some nice improvements in our performances which will set us up well for leagues and solidify our roster.”
Nicholas Lombardo won the long jump in last year's YSU meet, beating out 21 jumpers with a leap of 23-2 ¾. Sophia Nnadi took first in the shot put with a heave of 45-10.
Sarah Chandler was named Patriot League Track Athlete of the Week and Bison Athlete of the Week for her performance in the Penn State National Invitational last weekend. Chandler, along with Christine Bendzinski, Jess Bridle and Emma Harris, set the school record in the distance medley relay with a time of 11:34.61. Chandler also ran the fifth fastest time in program history in the 1,000-meter invite (2:52.70).
Peter Murray paced the Bison men at the meet with his first place finish in the 3,000 meter run (8:28.14).
Bucknell hosted the 18th Annual Bison Open last weekend, where Steve Bolger took first in the high jump (6-4 ¼) and Carly Reiner earned the top spot in the triple jump (38-2 ¾).
Following this weekend's competition, the Bison will return to Gerhard Fieldhouse for their final home meet of the indoor season. The Bucknell Tune-Up will be held on Friday, Feb. 12.
