LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell softball team opened the season at the ECU Clash this past weekend, and two players earned Corvias Patriot League Weekly Awards for their performances in the team's first five games. Sophomore Meghan Kovac was voted the league's Player of the Week, while senior Amanda Fazio was tabbed the Pitcher of the Week.
Kovac opened the 2016 season with a five-game hitting streak, including multiple hits in four games, helping the Bison to a 2-3 week at the ECU Pirate Clash. The first baseman also collected at least one RBI in four games, totaling five. She was 11-for-16 at the plate, hitting two doubles in a win over Saint Francis. She also hit her first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth inning against UMass.
Fazio pitched a total of 19 innings across four games, allowing just five earned runs for a 1.84 ERA. The left-hander allowed just four walks and struck out 15 batters, including two five-strikeout performances in the circle. Fazio is 1-2 to start the season, but both losses came by just one run.
Fazio has won three Pitcher of the Week honors during her career with the Bison. She also added one Player of the Week award last season.
Bucknell is back in action this weekend with another five games. The Bison will travel to Wilmington, North Carolina to play in the UNCW Invitational, where they will play three games against the host Seahawks and two against North Carolina Central.
