LEWISBURG, Pa. – Following two outstanding performances to open Patriot League play, Bucknell freshman Kaitlyn Slagus has been named both the Lids Team Sports Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week by the conference. She is the first player to earn both awards in a single week since Bison sophomore Jacquie Klotz accomplished the feat in late February of last season.
Slagus averaged 21.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in wins over Navy and Army West Point, helping Bucknell start conference play at 2-0 for the first time since the 2007-08 season. The 6-2 forward scored 21 points, including 13 straight for the Bison between the third and fourth quarters in the team's 51-41 win over the Mids on Wednesday. She followed that up with 21 points and eight rebounds in a 79-69 victory Saturday that snapped the Black Knights' seven-game winning streak.
Slagus shot 57 percent (17-30) from the field last week, including 80 percent on 8-of-10 shooting against Navy. She made all four of her free throw attempts in the two wins and is 18-for-22 at the line for the season.
It is the second Rookie of the Week award of the season for Slagus and the third of the year for the team. Kyi English was the Bison's other winner.
Bucknell looks to improve to 9-5 overall and start 3-0 in league play for the first time since the 2006-07 season when it travels to play American on Wednesday. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bender Arena.
