LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior Karen Campbell has led the Bucknell volleyball team to its best start in 10 years with a 4-1 record through two weeks of play. On Tuesday, she ended a five-year Bison drought by being named the Molten Patriot League Player of the Week.
Campbell is the first Bucknell player to earn volleyball's top weekly award since Rachel Rodriguez in 2010. The honor comes after she was named the Tournament MVP and led the Bison to a 2-0 record with wins over Brown and Hartford at the SHU Hampton Inn Shelton Invitational. She has now won awards in back-to-back weeks to start the season, including 5th Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week recognition following the season-opening Blue Devil Classic.
In the two victories this past weekend, Campbell averaged 15.5 kills and 5.5 blocks. She tallied 17 kills, a .517 hitting percentage and five total blocks in a four-set win over Hartford. It was the second time this season she recorded a hitting percentage of better than .500. She recorded 14 kills and six total blocks in a big 3-2 win over Brown. Campbell is tops on the team this season in kills/set (3.26), hitting percentage (.379) and blocks/set (1.05).
Bucknell will look to carry momentum from its first two tournaments into its three matches at Marist's Volley in the Valley this weekend. The Bison will play La Salle on Friday and Bryant and the host Red Foxes on Sunday. Following that, they are scheduled for five-straight home matches, including three at their home tournament on Sept. 18-19.
