LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell softball is set to open Patriot League play with a three-game series against Colgate this weekend at Becker Field. The Bison will host the Raiders for one game at 1 :30 p.m. on Saturday and will wrap up the series with a doubleheader beginning at noon on Sunday. Audio will be available for all three games via BucknellBison.com and on the radio on 90.5 WVBU-FM.
The Bison are coming off a doubleheader sweep of a red-hot Saint Francis team. The Red Flash entered the day with the 69th best RPI in the country, a record of 17-5 and wins in 10 of their past 11 games. Amanda Fazio and Dana Nielsen each pitched complete games to help the Bison improve to 18-10. The two combined to give up just one earned run in 5-3 and 6-1 victories.
Jacee Almond raised her season average to .258 with three hits against Saint Francis, while Kristen Zahn had two hits to up her average to .308. Both players smacked a pair of doubles and share the team lead with seven. Both of Almond's doubles were just a couple of feet shy of clearing the outfield wall, the first to left field and the second to dead center.
Amanda Fazio takes a six-game hitting streak into the weekend thanks to one single in each game against the Red Flash. It is her second hitting streak of at least six games this season. Carolyn Wan is riding a six-game on-base streak.
Colgate opens conference play with an overall record of 4-9 after losses in their past five games. The Raiders took the first game of the series against the Bison last season, but were out-scored 20-4 in games two and three.
Bucknell was picked second in the Patriot League Preseason poll, while Colgate was tabbed fifth in the seven-team conference. The Bison are one of just two teams in the league with a winning record in non-conference play. Lehigh is the other at 16-3.
Following its series with Colgate, Bucknell will travel to Penn State on Wednesday for a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m.
