LEWISBURG, Pa. – Coming off a 36-9 win at Bloomsburg, the Bucknell wrestling team looks to keep its win streak alive this Saturday evening when it travels to Washington, D.C., for a 7 p.m. match against fellow EIWA member American. The Bison, who remain 23rd in the national rankings, have won seven consecutive matches, their longest stretch of wins since 1992-93.
Saturday's match, which will have a live video broadcast available on the Patriot League Network, will conclude a four-match road trip for Bucknell, which is 12-3, 5-0 EIWA this season. The Bison have already equaled the school record for dual wins in a season and they are one of just two EIWA teams (along with Cornell) with an unblemished conference mark. The last time Bucknell had a longer winning streak was when it won 11 in a row spanning the end of the 1987-88 season and the beginning of the 1988-89 campaign.
Bucknell has been dominant during its winning streak, outscoring opponents 214-64 during their last seven victories. The Bison have captured 52 of 70 bouts over that span.
The entire lineup has helped Bucknell to success this year. In fact, eight of the 10 weight classes have winning records in duals this season, led by a 15-0 mark at heavyweight and a 14-1 record at 125 pounds.
Senior Joe Stolfi has been the reason for the unbeaten record at heavyweight. He is a team-best 15-0 in duals and is 30-5 on the season for his second consecutive 30-win campaign. Stolfi has won 17 straight bouts and his 48 career pins place him in second place on the program's all-time list. Stolfi is up to a 92-34 career record. He is the eighth wrestler in program history to post at least 90 career victories.
Petrov has nearly matched Stolfi's performance with a 14-1 dual mark at 125 pounds. The junior is 20-3 on the year and has won 13 of his last 14 bouts overall. Petrov has reached 20 wins for a third straight year and is now 71-26 in his career.
Sophomore 133-pounder Grim Gonzalez has been strong of late. He has won six straight bouts and is now 16-8 on the season, putting him just two victories shy of his freshman-year total. Gonzalez is 10-4 in duals and has tied his career high with three pins.
This is the eighth consecutive year Bucknell and American have met in a dual. The Bison lead the all-time series 19-4-1 and snapped a three-match losing streak with a 21-18 win in Lewisburg last January.
American is 6-9 on the season and 1-4 against EIWA competition. The Eagles snapped a seven-match losing streak this past Sunday with a 42-6 win at Davidson.
Following Saturday's match, Bucknell will return home for three matches. The Bison will host EIWA foes Franklin & Marshall (Feb. 13), Army (Feb. 14) and Binghamton (Feb. 20). The Franklin & Marshall and Army matches will air live on Bison Vision on the Patriot League Network.
