Game 2: Buffalo 5, Bucknell 3
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Bucknell baseball team used a 13-run seventh inning to break open a previously tied game and defeat Buffalo 17-4 in game one of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Heathwood Hall School. The Bison dropped game two by a 5-3 score despite solid pitching from starter Xavier Hammond, who pitched into the seventh inning.
Joe Ogren hit home runs in both ends of the doubleheader for Bucknell, which is now 5-2 on the season.
The Bison's 17 runs in game one marked their most since defeating Georgetown 18-3 to kickoff their 2012 spring break trip.
Bryson Hough had a solid outing for Bucknell in game one. He logged 6.0 innings and allowed just seven hits and three earned runs. Relievers Jordan Holtz and Austin Zimmerman pitched a combined three scoreless innings.
The Bison totaled 15 hits and drew 12 walks in game one with the majority of their damage being done in the seventh inning when 19 men came to the plate.
Bucknell had a 3-2 lead entering the seventh inning of game two, but Bulls reliever Mike Kaelin did not allow a hit over 3.1 innings of work and Buffalo (1-4) scored once in the seventh inning and twice in the eighth to earn the split of the doubleheader.
Bucknell and Buffalo, who are meeting for the first time, will wrap up their three-game series Sunday with a 10:30 a.m. contest. The series was originally scheduled to take place at Depew Field, but winter weather forced the teams south.
