LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshman Jacquie Klotz, sophomore Claire DeBoer and senior Audrey Dotson combined for 43 points, and Bucknell survived a buzzer-beating shot attempt by Navy for the second time this season in a 51-50 win Wednesday at Sojka Pavilion.
Bucknell, which recorded its first back-to-back wins over Navy since the 2008-09 season, improved to 15-9 overall and 7-6 in the Patriot League, while the Mids dropped to 13-11 overall and 7-6 in the conference. Both teams join Holy Cross in a three-way tie for fourth place, just one game back of third-place Lehigh.
“To play two one-point games with Navy and to come out on top in both of them, there has to be a little bit of luck involved,” said Bucknell head coach Aaron Roussell. “But I thought we actually executed pretty well offensively tonight even if we only had 51 points. I thought we took good shots and I thought we attacked the basket well.”
Navy missed a last-second 3-point attempt in Bucknell's 44-42 overtime win earlier this season. The Mids were able to get the ball inside this time, but the shot was well defended and went off the backboard, sealing the win for the Bison.
Bucknell made multiple plays to preserve its 51-50 lead in the final minutes leading up to the last shot, including two offensive rebounds on one possession with under a minute to play. On Navy's ensuing possession, Dotson took a charge at the baseline to give the Bison the ball back with 39 seconds left on the clock.
The Bison missed a shot at the other end, but not before taking the clock down to 6.7 seconds, leaving the Mids little time to go the length of the court.
Klotz scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the team in both categories for the second straight game. Over the past two games, the freshman is 15-of-26 from the field for 37 points and has tallied 21 boards. With the Bison trailing 32-31 in the second half against the Mids, she scored five straight points to put them up 36-32.
Dotson finished with 13 points six rebounds and three steals, while DeBoer had 13 points and five boards, Both players helped key a 12-1 run by Bucknell to open the second half. DeBoer scored five points during that stretch, including her first 3-pointer of the conference season, Dotson added five, and Klotz had a three-point play as the Bison erased a 27-19 deficit to take a 31-28 lead.
Sarita Condie led Navy with 15 points, while Marina Muenster finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Bucknell improved to 9-2 at Sojka Pavilion for the second straight season. The Bison will be back at home on Sunday as they host second-place Army at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network
