CAMBRIDGE, Mass./PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 23rd-ranked Bucknell wrestling team traveled to New England Sunday and came away with two victories. The Bison defeated Harvard 26-9 and followed a couple hours later with a 28-10 victory at Brown. Bucknell extended its winning streak to six matches, its longest since the program was reinstated prior to 2006-07.
The Bison are now 11-3 on the season and 5-0 against EIWA competition after a 3-0 weekend that included a victory Friday evening against Columbia. Bucknell has now eclipsed its win total from all of 2013-14 and is just one victory shy of equaling the program record for wins in a season.
Bucknell won 14 of the 20 bouts on the day, winning seven against both the Crimson and Bears. Six of the wins were for bonus points, including pins by Tyler Smith and Joe Stolfi against Brown.
The Bison jumped out to big leads in both matches, leading Harvard 20-3 through six bouts and Brown 16-0 through four bouts.
Paul Petrov, Grim Gonzalez, Victor Lopez, Robert Schlitt and Stolfi were all 2-0 on the day.
In the opener against the Crimson, Petrov earned a forfeit and Gonzalez followed with a 7-5 decision at 133. After a one-point loss by Smith at 141, Lopez, Rustin Barrick and Robert Schlitt posted consecutive victories.
Stolfi ended both matches with victories. He earned a 6-2 decision against David Ng against Harvard and pinned Brown's Sebatian Levin to extend his personal winning streak to 16. The pin of Levin was his 15th this year and the 47th of his career, moving him into sole possession of second place on the program's all-time list. Stolfi is now 29-5 on the year and has 91 career victories.
Petrov opened the nightcap with a 6-2 decision over Billy Watterson before Gonzalez (major decision) and Smith (fall) followed with bonus-point wins. Lopez registered a decision at 149 to extend the lead to 16-0. Schlitt, Tyler Greene and Stolfi concluded the bout with wins for the Bison.
Bucknell will take one week off before getting back on the mat next Sunday, Feb. 1, at Bloomsburg. Start time is 2 p.m.
