Cioffi & Urbinati Win A Doubles Flight at Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The doubles tandem of junior Maria Cioffi and Michele Urbinati claimed the Flight A championship at the Bucknell Invitational, which wrapped up on Saturday at the Gerhard Fieldhouse Courts. The Bison also produced finalists at B Single and B Doubles in a strong showing against Villanova, Mount St. Mary's and Bloomsburg.
Cioffi and Urbinati topped Sruthi Kamprath and Cassandra Powell of Mount St. Mary's 8-4 in the semifinals, and then they defeated Samantha Shafer and Victoria Martinez in the championship match.
Cioffi was knocked out of the A Singles draw with a three-set loss in the semifinals, but she bounced back to defeat Shafer 6-3, 6-0 in the third-place match.
A B Singles, freshman Madeline Melch got into the final with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Connor Brewer of Villanova, but Melch's run ended with a 7-5, 6-2 loss to the Wildcats' Linley Busby.
In the C Singles flight, Christie Schneider lost her first-round match to Martinez on Friday, but she worked her way back to win two matches by identical 6-1, 6-2 scores to claim the consolation draw.
Freshman Emilie Bush defeated Isabella Draper of Mount St. Mary's, 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals before falling to Kate Pettee 6-1, 7-6 in the final.
The young doubles tandem of sophomore Melissa Parks and freshman Allison Lane advanced to the B Doubles final after a tight 8-6 win over a Villanova duo in the semifinals. But they fell 8-4 to Pettee and Aphrah Brokaw of Villanova in the final.
The Bison will be back in action with another home tournament next weekend.
