The women's tennis team is back home this weekend, as the Bison host the Bucknell Invite. The matches are set to begin on Friday, Sept. 19. Coming off of a weekend of untraditional play at the Carnegie Mellon Invite, the team has been working hard to prepare themselves for the incoming competitors.
“The Carnegie Mellon matches were tough,” head coach Rebecca Helt said. “We are plagued with some injuries at the moment, but we are hoping to get our players healthy for this weekend. We're hoping to turn around our performances.”
Bloomsburg, Mount St. Mary's and Villanova will be participating in the upcoming invitational. Last year's Bucknell Invite featured the same opponents, and the home team had much success.
In 2013's invite, Stephanie Pino finished first in the Blue Singles Flight. She and former teammate Lydia Colvin claimed a doubles title.
Two returning sophomores claimed top spots as freshmen last year. Michele Urbinati came in first place in the White Singles Flight. In the Grey Flight, Jorie Fox finished in the top spot of the bracket.
Helt believes the hard work her team has put in will be beneficial in facing great competition this weekend.
“Villanova and Mount St. Mary's always have talented teams. We are looking forward to another weekend of tough competition, but hoping that our past three weeks of work will pay off and show in the results.
“Bloomsburg will also bring a group of talented players, whom we already saw in this season's first tournament.”
The Bison claimed six wins this past weekend, and are now looking forward to a healthy team and top spot finishes on their home court in Lewisburg. The invite is set to begin at 2 p.m. on Friday.
