LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team concluded a weekend of Patriot League play on Sunday, dropping a 5-2 decision to conference newcomer Boston University on the Bucknell Tennis Courts. The Bison, who earned wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, fell to 2-13 overall and 1-3 in league play with the loss, while the Terriers improved to 7-8 and 4-0 in conference action with the win.
“Boston University is a very good team,” commented interim head men's tennis coach Craig Schwartz. “The key to beating these teams is securing the doubles point. We will have a good week of practice and get ready to battle next week.”
Boston University took wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to claim the point, with Stefan Lemire and Mario Sandoval taking an 8-3 victory over seniors Scott Bernstein and Chris Tortora in the second match, and Jay Leelavanich and Jake De Vries grabbing an 8-3 triumph over freshman Bryan Adams and junior Octavio Canibe. Sophomore Nick Bybel and senior Aidan Lynch provided a bright spot in doubles play however, battling to an 8-4 win over Chanon Varapongsittikul and Jesse Frieder in the top match.
The Terriers extended their lead to 2-0 with a win at No. 2 singles, but Bybel took his fifth consecutive singles win in the top match, defeating Varapongsittikul 6-4, 6-0 to bring the Bison within one. The sophomore is now 11-4 this season at No. 1 singles and undefeated in conference play.
