HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Bucknell women's tennis team took to the outdoor courts for the first time this season on Tuesday morning, falling 6-1 to South Carolina State at Chaplin Park in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Senior Elena Vidrascu earned the team's sole victory, playing to a win at No. 1 singles, as the Bison, who have not competed since Feb. 1, fell to 0-3 in the season. The Bulldogs improved to 3-4 with the victory.
“We played a lot of good points and had a lot of close games,” said head women's tennis coach Rebecca Helt, “but we just weren't consistent enough to close out games against a solid southern team. It was our first match outdoors this spring, so we struggled a bit to find our timing. Every time our team practices and plays down here, their confidence and execution will improve a lot.”
All three of Bucknell's doubles pairings put up tough fights, but South Carolina State claimed the point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Vidrascu and sophomore Maria Cioffi dropped an 8-1 decision to Klara Dohanlova and Intissar Rassif at the No. 1 spot, while sophomore Stephanie Pino and junior Lydia Colvin fell to Victoriia Khatcei and Marketa Marcanikova by a score of 8-2. Freshman Michele Urbinati and junior Alyssa McAndrew trailed 6-4 in their match when the Bulldogs claimed the doubles point.
Vidrascu earned Bucknell's only win of the day, playing to a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Filippova at No. 1 singles. The win, the senior's second straight at the top singles spot, lifted her season mark to 6-6 and her career record to 50-51, moving her into 11th on the program's all-time singles victory list. Additionally, Vidrascu now holds a 106-93 overall record, the ninth best in Bucknell women's tennis history.
Several other singles matches were close, with Colvin almost forcing a third set at the No. 3 spot, and Pino falling 6-7, 6-3 (13-11) in the No. 6 match, but the Bison just couldn't find a way to overcome the Bulldogs.
The squad will return to the court on Wednesday morning for another match in Hilton Head Island, S.C., taking on George Mason at 8 a.m.
