HAMILTON, N.Y., -- Playing the same opponent for the second consecutive match, the Bucknell volleyball team lost 3-0 on the road to Colgate on Saturday evening. The Raiders won by final scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 26-24.
Colgate jumped to third place with the win, improving to 11-7 overall and 5-3 in the conference. Bucknell is still very much in the running for postseason play, but dropped to 4-13 overall and 3-6 in the Patriot League.
“Colgate played a very strong match with few errors,” Bucknell head coach Anna Allison said. “We finally found our momentum in the third set with strong and consistent performers in Erika Eastley and Kristen Parks, but we camp up shot. There is still a lot of matches left, and we have our sights set on next weekend.”
The Bison nearly stayed alive in the match with a strong third set. Facing match point, Erika Eastley tied the set on a kill with an assist from Meghan Wentzel. But Colgate responded by scoring the final two points, both on kills by Kate Reilly.
Prior to the exciting ending, the third set saw back-and-forth action. Colgate jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, but Bucknell battled back. The Bison not only erased the deficit, but led by as much as three (21-18) following an attack error by the Raiders.
Hailey Stout led the Bison in kills with five, while Eastley was right behind her with four. Parks and Hana Sawanobori each reached double figures in digs with 19 and 10, respectively. Wentzel tallied 15 assists, while Karen Campbell contributed two block assists.
Kathleen Harris did a large chunk of the damage for Colgate. She had 18 of the team's 53 kills, posting a hitting percentage of .350. Jackie Macy had 24 assists and 17 digs, while Kenzie Hume and Diane Seely finished with four block assists apiece.
The Bison will travel for a pair of conference away matches next weekend. They will play at Holy Cross on Friday, and will make the trip to play at Army on Saturday.
