LEWISBURG, Pa. – A busy weekend is ahead for the Bucknell wrestling team. The Bison open the weekend Friday at 7 p.m. when they host EIWA rival American in Davis Gym. Bucknell then travels to George Mason (9 a.m.) and No. 13 Virginia (2 p.m.) on Sunday. Live results for all three matches will be available via TrackWrestling.com, while Friday's home competition will be broadcast live and free of charge on Bison Vision on the Patriot League Network.
This is the third time in four weekends the Bison will have three duals. Three weeks ago they competed three times in one day at the Virginia Duals and two weeks ago they defeated Brown and Clarion on Saturday before falling to Penn on Sunday to complete a 2-1 weekend.
Bucknell (5-8, 2-2 EIWA) is coming off a 19-18 loss at Columbia last Friday. The score was tied 18-18 after a pin by heavyweight Joe Stolfi concluded the match, but the Lions earned the winning point on bout points.
Stolfi, who is ranked 20th nationally, and 125-pounder Paul Petrov continue to pace the team in individual victories with matching 21-6 records this season. Stolfi has won six straight bouts and is listed second nationally in pins with 16. That figure is tied for third on the Bucknell single-season list, while his 25 career pins place him seventh on that ledger.
Petrov brings a seven-bout winning streak into the weekend and is coming off a 13-9 decision at Columbia. He has 12 bonus-point victories this year, including five wins by fall. After going 11-9 in duals as a freshman, Petrov is a strong 10-2 in duals, including 4-0 in EIWA duals.
Junior Tyler Lyster also enters the weekend on a hot streak, having captured four of his last five bouts. With a 3-0 record in bouts decided by fall, Lyster is now 11-1 in his career in bouts ending with a pin.
American is 6-5 on the year and 4-3 opposite EIWA competition. The Eagles defeated Binghamton by a 21-19 score last Saturday and have won three straight meetings with Bucknell. The Bison, though, lead the all-time series 18-4-1. American has ranked wrestlers at 125 pounds (No. 8 David Terao) and 197 pounds (No. 10 Daniel Mitchell).
This will be the second time Bucknell and George Mason (6-10, 0-0 EWL) have met this season. The two teams squared off at the Virginia Duals earlier this month with the Bison posting a 27-9 victory to extend their lead in the all-time series to 5-0. The Patriots will wrestle at Clarion on Saturday afternoon.
Virginia (13-3, 2-1 ACC) is ranked 13th nationally in the latest Amateur Wrestling News poll and has four ranked wrestlers in its projected lineup. The Cavaliers have won six of their last seven duals and will host ACC opponent Maryland on Friday evening.
Bucknell will next be in action next Sunday, Feb. 9, when it again wrestles two opponents at two different locations in the same day. The Bison will face Army at West Point, N.Y., at 2 p.m. and then travel to Fairfield, Conn., for a 7 p.m. matchup with Sacred Heart.
