LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior Christian Lupica (Newtown, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep), who set school records in the 60 meter hurdles and the 300 meter dash at the Bison Opener in December, broke his own program mark in the hurdles in Saturday's Gulden Invitational while also setting a new Gerhard Fieldhouse record with his performance. His dominant outing helped the Bucknell men's track and field team to a first place finish in the annual meet and has earned him Patriot League M-F Athletic Track Athlete of the Week honors and Bison Athlete of the Week accolades. The junior is earning the league award for the sixth time in his career, and is receiving the school's top weekly honor for the fifth time.
Lupica began the day with a strong performance in the 200 meter dash, finishing in 21.85 to take top honors in the event. His time, which qualified him for the IC4A Championships in March, was just one one-hundredth off of the facility record that he set at last year's Gulden Invitational.
After turning in a solid time of 8.07 in the prelims of the hurdles, Lupica blazed past the rest of the field in the finals of the event finishing in a time of 7.92. His winning performance was 14 one-hundredths faster than the rest of the field and well ahead of the IC4A cut. Lupica's previous school record in the event was 8.03, and he also took down the facility mark of 7.99, set by Georgetown's Chris Kinney in the Bison Opener on Dec. 6, 2008.
The Bison will continue to prep for the upcoming Patriot League Championships with two competitions next weekend, with part of the squad remaining in Lewisburg to compete at the Bison Open & Multi and the rest of the team traveling down the road to University Park, Pa. for the Penn State National Invitational. Both meets are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31 and will continue through Saturday, Feb. 1.
