LEWISBURG, Pa. - Matt Daley, a 2004 Bucknell graduate and a former member of the Bison baseball program, made his return to Major League Baseball this past weekend when he pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the New York Yankees against the Boston Red Sox. Daley pitched the ninth inning in the 12-8 loss and struck out two while yielding one hit.
Daley pitched parts of three seasons (2009-11) with the Colorado Rockies. He missed the 2012 campaign due to injury and pitched in the Yankees' minor league system most of this summer. The right-hander put together a solid campaign with the AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, going 2-3 with a 2.54 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 39.0 innings of relief. Opposing batters hit just .197 off him.
Daley has now pitched in 93 career games at the Major League level and is 1-2 with a 4.65 ERA over 81.1 innings. He has 82 strikeouts and limited the opposition to a .258 batting average.
A member of New York's 40-man roster, Daley, 31, is wearing uniform No. 40 as a Yankee.
A native of Garden City, N.Y., Daley was an Academic All-District selection as a senior at Bucknell when he produced a 6-2 record with a 2.82 ERA. He went more than 30 innings without allowing an earned run that season and finished with 49 strikeouts in 51 innings. Daley was a member of two Patriot League championship teams (2001, 2003) while a Bison.
The Yankees are in the midst of a four-game series at Baltimore this week.
