LEWISBURG, Pa. - Elena Vidrascu (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland), Elizabeth Morgan (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield School), Aidan Lynch (La Cañada Flintridge, Calif./La Cañada) and Kyle Rosen (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) were named the 2013-14 captains for Bucknell tennis, head coach Rebecca Helt announced on Friday. It is the second consecutive year in the leadership position for seniors Vidrascu and Morgan, while classmates Lynch and Rosen will take over the reins for a men's squad that posted one of its most successful seasons a year ago.
As juniors last year, Vidrascu and Morgan both served as captains for a very young squad. Vidrascu enters her final season with the Bison ranked among the top 15 on nearly every Bucknell career record list. After three complete seasons, she is ninth in program history in doubles wins with a record of 48-41. That mark was helped by a 22-10 finish last year, which is tied for seventh on the single-season list. Vidrascu is also tied for 16th in career singles victories (44-45) and 11th in combined victories (92-86).
Vidrascu's 22 doubles wins was a career high as was her 17-18 singles record. Both totals ranked among the top three in on the team in 2012-13.
"I'm very fortunate to be named co-captain for another year, especially it being my senior year," said Vidrascu. "I'm excited to work on the things from last year that went both well and that needed some better execution, including leadership skills. The work will help myself, but more importantly the team, in winning a Patriot League Championship."
Morgan remains one of Bucknell's trusted reserve players. The veteran, who played exclusively at sixth singles last season, went 3-8 in solo matches and 5-12 in doubles. Much of her success throughout her career has come during fall tournament action, although Morgan has continued to contribute to the team's results during league play as well. This past spring saw her earn victories over Lafayette in singles, while her doubles win against Colgate allowed the Bison to secure the match's first point and ultimately win the bout 4-3.
"I am excited and honored to serve as co-captain alongside Elena again this coming year," said Morgan, who will be spending part of her summer studying in Italy. "Taking my experiences as captain from last year to heart, I am eager to continue solidifying the already strong bonds we have formed and hope to guide us towards even bigger things in the upcoming season. As a more experienced team both on and off the court, I am confident that with enough focus, hard work and dedication, we will be able to reach our ultimate goal of winning the Patriot League Championship."
Another four-year player, Rosen returns in 2013-14 as the men's team's winningest player currently on the roster. The senior ranks 22nd all-time at Bucknell in singles with a 40-41 record. He is also 34th in combined victories, going 58-60 through his first three campaigns with the Bison.
Primarily a singles player Rosen went 11-13, including 9-8 in spring duals, last season. He played primarily in the second half of the lineup, seeing his greatest success at the fifth and sixth slots where he often clinched a team victory for the Bison.
Lynch joined the Bucknell squad as a sophomore and has spent much of his time at the top of the doubles lineup. He finished that first campaign playing at No. 1 doubles with Gregg Cohenca before his older teammate's historical trip to the NCAA Tournament. Last season, Lynch went 19-10 in doubles, more than doubling his wins total from the previous year. His 15-5 record in spring duals alone came from a 6-1 mark at the No. 1 position, 2-1 at No. 2 and 7-3 at No. 3. Undefeated in Patriot League play during the regular season Lynch did not lose back-to-back doubles matches during the spring. In the fall, he was also the Bucknell Quad doubles champion with Kelly Morque.
"I am very excited to be a co-captain of Bucknell tennis. My previous captains have inspired and prepared me for this role and I feel confident in taking on the responsibilities and rewards that go along with it," said Rosen. "Our team is a tight knit group of men that has grown immensely over the past few years both on and off the court. Aidan and I have no doubt that this year will bring an even stronger work ethic and a successful team come Patriot League tournament time. Go Bison!"
"Bucknell men's tennis is a very special program and one of the most tight-knit groups on campus. It is a privilege and an honor to follow in the footsteps of the great captains of the past," Lynch echoed. "We have all been through such great highs and lows together and I cannot believe it is going to be my final and senior season. I know that my teammates and I are more than ready to win our first Patriot League title. We have been building a bond both on and off the court every year, which helps prepare each and every player on this team. We tasted it last year with a tough loss to Lehigh and I am confident that everyone will come back hungrier than ever because every day is a great day to be a Bison."
The Bucknell women's squad finished the 2012-13 season at 10-12 overall, while the men were 15-8, which was good for the second-most team victories in program history for a single season. Both teams were 3-2 in the Patriot League and advanced to the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament.
