LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's track and field's Leonard Joseph added to his awards haul on Tuesday as he was named the Bison Athlete of the Week for the second time this year. The senior became Bucknell's first-ever hammer throw winner at the IC4A Championships last weekend, leading the Bison to a 12th-place finish in the team standings.
Joseph threw 208-8 in the hammer in Princeton, N.J., becoming the program's first IC4A champion in a field event. He is also just the third Bison to win a scored event at IC4As, joining Bucknell Athletics Hall of Famer Thomas McLean, who won the 800 meters in 1976 and 1977, and Bob Kelly, who was the 10,000 meter champion in 1992.
The win was the second straight for Joseph in the hammer throw as he also took gold at the Patriot League Championships one week earlier. In six meets this spring, Joseph has come away the victor five times. The only non-win was a third-place finish in the Championship flight at the Penn Relays.
On Monday, Joseph was one of five Bison to be named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team. He was joined by fellow thrower Luke Webster on the men's side and Caroline Tolli, Emily Waksmunski and Jennifer Zymet on the women's.
Joseph became a repeat winner of the Bison Athlete of the Week. He also received the honor on April 15 after he set the school record in the hammer throw at 209-11, winning the Bison Outdoor Classic. He also took fifth in the discus at the home meet.
While a majority of Bucknell track and field has finished its season, Joseph's campaign continues on at the NCAA East Regional Preliminaries May 23-25 in Greensboro, N.C. Ranked 10th in the region in his premier event, Joseph will be looking to advance to the National Championships for a second consecutive spring. He earned Honorable Mention All-American accolades last spring, finishing 17th nationally.
