LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell baseball team will once again go on the road for a Patriot League series this weekend when the Bison travel to Annapolis, Md., to face Navy. After dropping their Patriot League-opening series against Holy Cross last weekend, Bucknell will try to rebound and move up the league standings.
Doubleheaders will be played both Saturday and Sunday at Navy's Max Bishop Stadium. First pitch both days is noon. Live video broadcasts will be available via Bison Vision, while live statistics will be available through GameTracker.
The Bucknell-Navy series dates back to 1904. Bucknell is 56-66-1 all-time against the Mids, but recently the Bison have had success, winning 15 of 21 meetings since 2008. The two teams have split the regular-season series the last two years, but Bucknell captured the 2010 series 3-1.
This season Bucknell is 6-21 overall and 1-3 in Patriot League play. This trip to Annapolis marks the start of a nine-game road trip that could prove pivotal in the Bison's season. By the time Bucknell returns to Depew Field on April 16, it will have already completed three of the five Patriot League series.
First, Bucknell must focus on one of the stronger teams in the Patriot League. The Midshipmen are 16-13 on the year and 3-1 in the Patriot League. Navy is hitting .268 as a team and has a Patriot League-best 4.02 team ERA.
Greg Dupell is leading the Midshipmen with a .316 batting average, three home runs and 24 RBIs. Senior Ben Nelson is the Navy's ace pitcher with a 1.30 ERA while owning a 5-1 record.
Bucknell owns a 5.02 ERA and is currently hitting .226. Carter Bumgardner, Corey Furman and Rob Krentzman have been coming on strong lately. In the last 10 games, Bumgardner is hitting .324 with 12 hits and a team-leading seven RBIs. Furman has hits in six straight games and is 22-for-50 (.440) over his last 12 outings. Krentzman also brings a six-game hitting streak into the weekend. He hit his first career home run last Saturday at Holy Cross and is hitting .368 during his current streak.
Bryson Hough and Dan Goldstein lead the Bucknell pitching staff with two wins each. Goldstein has a 4.32 ERA and also leads the team with 36 strikeouts. Hough has a 4.47 ERA over 44.1 innings pitched. That duo, along with junior lefty Dan Weigel, have pitched 126.2 of Bucknell's 222.1 innings this season.
The Bison continue to give themselves chances to win games, but have not been able to break through. In the last 10 games they are 2-8, but six of those eight losses have been by just one run
After returning from Annapolis, Bucknell will play its annual game at Penn State on Wednesday, April 10, before traveling to Bethlehem, Pa., next weekend to face the Lehigh Mountain Hawks in a four-game series.
