WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Bucknell men's track and field's Leonard Joseph won the hammer throw and Christian Lupica logged two of the fastest hurdle times in program history to open the Colonial Relays hosted by William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., on Friday. The performances by the Bison put them in third place in the team standings with 14 events in the books.
Competing in his first meet of the season, Joseph threw 194-6 in the hammer for the win. That event was particularly successful for Bucknell, which also scored with a third-place finish from Ted Mottola (158-10) and a seventh-place showing from Jack Fellows (154-6).
The hammer was not the only field event that earned the Bison points. Jason Brown tied for fourth in the high jump, clearing 6-4 ¼. Luke Webster (50-10) and Quinten Marcott (49-7 ¾) also placed fifth and eighth, respectively in the shot put.
Some of the best marks for the Bison came on the track. Lupica placed third in the 400-meter hurdles and second in the prelims of the 110-meter high hurdles. His time in the longer race, 53.24 seconds, ranks fifth in program history. The sophomore entered the meet in the No. 7 spot on the top-10 list, a position he earned just last Saturday. In a week's time, Lupica knocked more than a second off his personal best to improve his standing.
In the 110 hurdles, Lupica clocked in at 14.36 seconds, giving him the third-best time at Bucknell. That moved him up one position on the ledger.
Although no other top-10 times fell on Friday, the Bison got some strong performances from distance runners such as John Dugan. Dugan took third in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:33.93. Brian Charland was 10th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the finish line in 9:22.35.
At the slightly shorter distances, Kevin Tapper was third in the 400 (49.18) and Alex Jagelsky finished 15th in the 800. Jagelsky's time of 1:53.54 was less than one second off his personal best, which ranks ninth in program history.
After 14 events, Bucknell is third in the team standings with 49 points, just 0.5 behind second-place Monmouth. Rutgers leads the field with 80. Virginia Tech is in fourth out of 28 schools that have scored, tallying 47 points so far.
Competition at the Colonial Relays concludes tomorrow. The action gets underway at 9 a.m., starting with the field events.
