PHILADELPHIA - Leonard Joseph and the Bucknell men's 4x100 relay both took third place at the Penn Relays and the Bison collected a dozen wins at the Bloomsburg Maroon & Gold Invitational on Saturday. Joseph's bronze medal came in the hammer throw, while at Bloomsburg, Brian Monahan and Nathaniel Witter set program top-10 marks in the shot put and pole vault.
Joseph saw his three-meet winning streak in the hammer come to an end with his third-place finish in the championship flight on Saturday in Philadelphia. The senior threw 199-9.
Also at the Penn Relays, Jacob Eaton Hall, Justin Hicks, Kamal Riley and Christian Lupica ran one of the fastest 4x100 times in program history for the second consecutive day. After clocking in at 41.28 on Friday, the quartet improved to 41.03 seconds in the IC4A division final. That time ranks second at Bucknell.
Of Bucknell's 12 event wins at Bloomsburg, several came with career-best marks. Among them was Brian Monahan's 52-1 in the shot put. Monahan now ranks eighth all-time at Bucknell. The sophomore, who also placed second in the discus on Saturday, was not among the top 10 in any event entering the season but has since broken into the rankings in both the shot put and discus (9th, 157-5).
Monahan led a group of Bison that placed first through fifth in the shot put at Bloomsburg. Quinten Marcott was second (52-0 ½), followed by Stephen Koullias (50-6 ¼), Jack Fellows (50-3 ½) and Mark Stafurik (46-9 ½).
Witter was also a winner, clearing 15-7 in the pole vault. The height breaks his previous career best by four inches and gives him sole possession of No. 6 on the record list. Scott Weismiller took third in the event, clearing 14-7 ¼.
Patryk Najbar was Bucknell's lone two-event winner, taking the titles in the 100 (11.02 seconds) and 200 (22.23). The 110-meter hurdles title went to Grant Reynolds and Bucknell won the 4x400 as well.
Chris Oesterlin won the 800, while Robert Yamnicky was the lead finisher in the 1,500. The distance success continued to go Bucknell's way as Peter Murray won the 5,000 meters in 14:47.94. The only runner under 15 minutes, Murray also led a group of Bison that claimed each of the top 10 places in the event.
Joining Witter and Monahan in field event wins were Ray Holmes and Alex Prieto. Holmes took gold in the long jump with a mark of 22-8. Prieto earned his first victory of the year in the triple jump at 45-5 ¾. Ben Burgess and Dan Gevirtz completed the sweep by finishing 2-3 in the triple jump. Fellows won the discus for his first title as well.
Bucknell will now turn its attention to the Patriot League Championships May 3-4 in Bethlehem, Pa. The Bison men are looking for their fourth consecutive outdoor title.
