OLEAN, N.Y. –Bucknell sophomore left-hander Xavier Hammond took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the nightcap of Tuesday's baseball doubleheader at St. Bonaventure, but a one-out single by Billy Urban broke up the no-hitter and began a three-run rally for the Bonnies who came back to post a 3-2 victory. The Bison also lost game one by a 10-1 score as they fell to 14-29 on the year. St. Bonaventure improved to 13-20.
The doubleheader featured a pair of seven-inning games and Hammond (0-5) nearly threw the fifth no-hitter in program history, and the first since future Major Leaguer Matt Daley in 2004. He allowed just three baserunners over the first six innings.
Bucknell entered the bottom of the seventh with a 2-0 lead. Hammond walked leadoff hitter Austin Ingraham and then struck out Jason Radwan for the first out. Urban's single followed, putting the tying run on base. A double that started off foul but curved fair and hit third base before bouncing into left field by game one starting pitcher Joel Rosencrance (6.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 4 K) tied the score and brought reliever Max Kra into the game. Kra got the first hitter to pop out and was trying to send Bucknell to its fifth extra-inning game in the last week, but pinch-hitter Mark Hutmacher singled to left, plating the winning run.
The Bison were held scoreless through five innings by Bonnies starter Steven Klimek and managed just two hits off him. They finally broke through in the sixth against reliever Ryan Winton. Travis Clark led off with a single and later scored on a Justin Meier single, while an Anthony Gingerelli ground out plated Meier for the second run of the frame.
Bucknell registered four hits in game two with Meier collecting half of them. Clark and Will Mooney added a single apiece.
St. Bonaventure scored seven runs in the first two innings of game one en route to its nine-run win. Bison starter Jack McLinden (0-2) suffered the loss in 1.1 innings, while Austin Zimmerman and Tom Hrabchak appeared out of the bullpen. Bucknell pitchers issued 11 walks and yielded nine hits in the contest.
Corey Furman was 3-for-4 with one run scored, Carter Bumgardner was 2-for-4 and Rob Krentzman drove in a run for the Bison in game one. Bucknell's run came in the third inning when Furman led off with a double, advanced to third on a Bumgardner single and then scored on Krentzman's single up the middle.
Four different St. Bonaventure hitters posted two hits in game one. Thaddeus Johnson led the team with four RBIs.
The non-league portion of Bucknell's regular-season schedule is now complete. The Bison will wrap up the regular season this weekend when they host Lafayette in a four-game series at Depew Field. Audio broadcasts of all four games will air live on SportsJuice.com. Senior Day ceremonies will take place prior to Saturday's doubleheader.
