LEWISBURG, Pa. – Josh Katten broke the Bucknell all-time wins record on Sunday afternoon in an effort that helped Bison men's tennis to a 7-0 win over Lafayette at the Varsity Tennis Courts. With two victories against the Leopards, Katten is now 151-93 in his career, putting him atop the program list in combined wins. With a 12-7 team record, Bucknell has also collected its most wins in a single season since 2002.
Katten overtook the record from Ryan Sandburg who amassed a career mark of 150-113 from 2005-09. The current Bison senior teamed up with Nick Bybel at No. 2 doubles to tie the record early in the afternoon. The duo blanked Brian Stefanowicz and Gavin Studner for the 8-0 victory. It was the fourth straight win for Katten and Bybel, who are now 12-6 when playing together this spring.
Katten clinched the record with another decision over Stefanowicz. Katten defeated his Leopard foe 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles to take over the piece of history.
Katten had logged at least 20 doubles wins in each of his last two campaigns and, including his 23-12 mark this year, is 81-42 in his career. His singles record is also an impressive 70-51 over the last four years. Both of those marks rank second in program history.
Evan Zimmer made his own move up the career combined wins list. The senior opened his day with an 8-5 win over Brandon Goldstein and Scott Gelbman with Aidan Lynch at No. 1 doubles. Zimmer then cruised past Gavin Studner at third singles, 6-0, 6-1. With his performance, Zimmer is now tied for third in program history with a career record of 145-77, equaling the wins put up by Ira Reibeisen from 2004-08.
Also winning on Sunday were Octavio Canibe and Kelly Morque, who helped Bucknell complete the doubles sweep. The Bison defeated Alex Charchalis and Jake Lazer 8-4. Morque went on to defeat Gelbman 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
Bybel was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Goldstein at the top of the lineup, while the bottom of the lineup saw some newer faces. Ryan Marcil topped Chris Matturi 6-4, 6-2, while Chris Tortora took down Charchalis 6-3, 6-3.
With its 12-7 overall record, Bucknell has its most wins since the 2002 squad went 14-6. Only three other teams have more as the 1998 team finished at 19-2, followed by the 1996 (14-7) and 1997 (14-8) squads. The dozen victories are also the most in a single season under head coach Rebecca Helt.
Bucknell will not be able to rest on its success for long. The Bison, which are now 2-2 in the Patriot League, will host Lehigh tomorrow at 3 p.m. in their regular-season conference finale. The match was originally postponed from last week due to rain.
