Track's Lupica Earns Bison Athlete of the Week Honors for Breaking Two School Records

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell track and field's Christian Lupica broke three school records in two events at the IC4A Championships last weekend, earning him the title of the Bison Athlete of the Week for the second time this season. The sophomore was also an All-East honoree for the second time in his career as a member of the 4x400 relay.
Lupica opened his championship weekend with a time of 21.55 seconds in the prelims of the 200 meters on Saturday. That time topped his own school record, which he set at in the prelims of the 2012 IC4A Championships, by three-hundredths of a second.
Later in the day, Lupica anchored the 4x400 that ran a time of 3:14.02 to advance to the event final. The relay, which also included Kevin Tapper, Anthony Menza and Jacob Eaton Hall, improved even more in the last race of the championship. The quartet placed seventh overall in 3:12.38. The four Bison are the first in program history to run a sub-3:15 in the event.
With the seventh-place finish in the 4x400, Lupica and his teammates were named to the All-East squad. It is the second time he has received honors at the IC4A Championships. Lupica was also an All-East performer in the 60-meter hurdles last winter.
Lupica is now at least part owner of four different indoor school records, all of which were set this season. In addition to his new 200-meter and 4x400 marks, he also currently ranks No. 1 in program history in the 60-meter hurdles (8.04) and 300 meters (34.77). Earlier this winter, he also set the Gerhard Facility record in the 200.
Lupica has twice been named the Bison Athlete of the Week this season after also being recognized on Jan. 20. It his third career honor.
Bucknell tied for 15th in the final team standings at the IC4A Championships. A combined six school records fell as Kim Nagotko (200), Caroline Tolli (mile), Hana Casalnova (1,000) and the women's 4x400 relay also set new program standards at the ECAC Championships.
With the winter indoor season now at an end, the Bison will turn their attention to the outdoor track and field campaign. Competition begins March 30 at the UMBC Invitational.
