AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Valparaiso scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings and Crusader starter Kyle Wormington kept Bucknell off the scoreboard until the eighth inning as the Bison fell to Valparaiso by a 6-2 margin Thursday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park.
Bucknell (4-11) posted eight hits in the contest with leadoff hitter Corey Furman registering the first four-hit game of his career. His one-out double in the eighth started a two-run rally for the Bison. He later scored on a Robb Scott single, while Justin Meier's bases-loaded walk brought home Travis Clark.
Bucknell had just one baserunner reach third base over the game's first seven innings and went down 1-2-3 three times against Wormington (1-3), who departed two outs into the eighth. Ben Mahar retired four of the five hitters he faced to earn his first save.
Valparaiso (7-10), which had its leadoff hitter reach in six of eight innings, had no more than one baserunner in a frame outside of the fifth and sixth innings. However, seven hitters stepped to the plate in the fifth and eight more in the sixth. The Crusaders capitalized on three Bison errors in those two innings.
Freshman Andrew Andreychik (0-1) started the first game of his career on the mound for Bucknell and was solid. He logged 5.0 innings and allowed six hits and three runs while striking out two. Senior Marcus Garone pitched the sixth inning, while rookie Jonathan Lucas pitched two shutout innings in his second career appearance.
Anthony Gingerelli was 1-for-5 in the contest from the No. 2 spot in the Bison lineup, extending his hitting streak to a team-best four games.
Bucknell's final two games in Florida will be against Big Ten teams as it faces Indiana on Friday and Northwestern on Saturday. The Bison are 3-2 on their week-long trip.
