Bucknell Men's Tennis Cruises Past Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, 6-1

HUMACAO, PUERTO RICO – Bucknell men's tennis could hardly have asked for a better start to its Spring Break swing through Puerto Rico than its 6-1 win over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Monday. The Bison swept doubles and took seven of eight singles matches, including two exhibition bouts. Bucknell (5-3) will take on Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Bucknell played some close matches in doubles but still came away with three victories. Aidan Lynch and Ryan Marcil, who was playing his first match of the season with the Bison, battled it out for a 9-8 win at the third position, while Kelly Morque and Evan Zimmer won 8-6 at No. 2. Only Nick Bybel and Josh Katten got through play easily, winning 8-3 at the top of the lineup.
Bybel, Zimmer, Katten and Marcil each collected their second wins of the day when the teams moved to singles action. Marcil needed a super tie break, 4-6, 7-6, (10-5) at the No. 5 spot in the lineup, but the other three wrapped things up in straight sets. Katten had the clinching victory, 6-1, 7-6, at fourth singles. Also winning was Kyle Rosen, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6.
Roy Skinner and Scott Bernstein took wins in their exhibition matches. Skinner cruised past his opponent, 6-4, 6-1, earning his first victory of the spring campaign. Bernstein needed a bit more time, turning the tables on his foe after dropping the first set 2-6 and rallying 6-2, (10-4) down the stretch.
Bucknell has now won four of its last five matches. It will continue its trip in Puerto Rico against Rio Piedras tomorrow and Florida A&M on Thursday.
