LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's wrestling team fell 23-16 to Lock Haven in a tight match Friday night in Davis Gym. The loss set the Bison back to a 6-10 record on the year, while the Bald Eagles improved to 6-5.
The dual came down to the final match up of the evening between Bucknell's Joe Stolfi and Lock Haven's Henry Turner. Stolfi was leading 3-2 in the third period, but Turner was able to pin Stolfi after 5:57 to clinch the victory for the Bald Eagles. The loss snapped Stolfi's career-best eight-match winning streak.
The Bison won five of the nine bouts contested but gave up a crucial six-point forfeit in the 125-pound weight class to give Lock Haven the early 6-0 lead.
Paul Petrov started the match strong for Bucknell by winning a 13-3 major decision over Cody Wheeler at 133. Petrov has won seven of his last eight bouts and improved to 16-9 this season.
In a low-scoring match at 141, Bucknell's Derrik Russell fell to No.18-ranked Daniel Neff 3-1.
The Bison battled back in a close match up at 149 as Adam Healey scored a takedown against Mac Maldarelli in the first sudden victory period to secure the match 3-1 and to narrow Lock Haven's lead to 9-7.
The Bald Eagles answered back at 157 as Billy Randt won by decision over Vincent Favia 4-1.
Bucknell's No.17 Corey Lear recorded his 20th win of the season in a 2-0 decision over Aaron McKinney to improve to 20-4 on the season. Lear has had three seasons during his career at Bucknell where he has recorded at least 20 victories.
The Bison kept the momentum going at 174 as Robert Schlitt won a 6-5 decision over Tyler Wood and allowed Bucknell to take control of the match for the first time, 13-12. In the third period Schlitt earned an escape followed by a takedown to gain a 6-3 lead. Wood later closed the gap with an escape and the riding time point, but Schlitt was able to hold on for the one-point victory.
Lock Haven's Fred Garcia secured a huge win for the Bald Eagles by garnering bonus points at 184 over Bucknell's Robert Marchese with a 21-6 tech fall.
Entering the final two matches of the evening the team score was in Lock Haven's favor at 17-13 but the Bison would once again narrow the gap to 17-16 with Tyler Lyster's 7-2 decision over Phil Sprenkle at 197. This win would prove to not be enough, however, as Lock Haven's Turner closed out the 23-16 victory for the Bald Eagles, who scored 17 points from just three weight classes (125, 184, 285).
The Bison will be back in action on Sunday as they travel to Ithaca, N.Y., to take on No.10 Cornell at 2 p.m.
