ITHACA, N.Y. - The Bucknell wrestling team traveled north to take on No. 10 Cornell Sunday afternoon at the Friedman Wrestling Center and came away with a 37-3 loss. Sophomore heavyweight Joe Stolfi posted the only win for the Bison with a 9-2 decision in the day's final bout.
Stolfi's decision was his ninth victory in his last 10 matches as he defeated Jacob Aiken-Phillips by the seven-point margin. He is now 16-12 this year and back above .500 (18-17) in his career.
Bucknell (6-11, 2-3 EIWA) was facing its seventh ranked opponent this year, equaling its most ranked foes in a season since the program was reinstated. The Bison have faced four top-10 teams.
Cornell (12-3, 7-0 EIWA) opened the match with a 6-0 lead thanks to a Bison forfeit at 125 pounds. The Big Red then won eight consecutive bouts en route to a 37-0 advantage before Stolfi's win. Cornell had four ranked grapplers in its lineup, including No. 1 Kyle Dake at 165 pounds.
Bucknell's Corey Lear, who is ranked 17th nationally at 165 pounds, faced Dake in the only matchup between ranked opponents. A three-time NCAA champion, Dake pinned Lear in 53 seconds. Dake has now won 65 consecutive bouts. His last loss came to Bucknell's Kevin LeValley in the 149-pound EIWA title bout in 2011.
The Bison will continue their three-match road trip Friday at Clarion. Start time is 7 p.m.
