EVANSTON, Ill. – First-year Bucknell wrestling assistant coach Jarrod Garnett has advanced to the finals of the 51st annual Midlands Championships. The 125-pound Garnett, who is the second seed in the bracket, will face Iowa's fourth-seeded Thomas Gilman in the finals Monday at 9 p.m. Eastern. The finals will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
A 2013 graduate of Virginia Tech who is competing as a member of the Bison Wrestling Club, Garnett will be attempting to defend his Midlands title. Last December he posted a 5-0 mark and won the 2012 125-pound title with an overtime victory over Jesse Delgado from Illinois.
This year, Garnett won each of his first four bouts en route to Monday's championship final. After posting wins by major decision and tech fall to advance to the quarterfinals, Garnett defeated Michigan's Sean Boyle by an 8-3 decision and followed that with a 10-8 win in sudden victory over Iowa's Cory Clark in the semifinals.
A 2013 All-American and a three-time ACC champion, Garnett wrapped up his collegiate career last spring ranked third in Virginia Tech history with 126 wins. He posted three 30-win campaigns, registered a 126-29 overall record and his 63 career dual meet victories rank third in program history. Garnett was the ACC Rookie of the Year in 2008-09, the 2013 ACC Championships Most Outstanding Wrestler, a three-time All-ACC selection and a four-time national qualifier.
One of just seven Virginia Tech wrestlers to reach 100 career victories at the time of his graduation, Garnett recorded 61 career bonus-point victories, including 24 by fall. He was 16-1 in ACC duals.
A Newark, Del., native and a Caravel Academy graduate, Garnett earned a bachelor's degree in apparel, housing and resource management, with a focus on consumer studies. He was twice a Dean's List member.
